Star Moss (Syntrichia ruralis), also known as Screw Moss or Twisted Moss, is a remarkably tough, drought-adapted moss grown from wild-type Middle Tennessee woodland stock. It forms low, dense tufts that shift dramatically with moisture: bright green and loosely spreading when hydrated, twisting tightly around the stem and turning reddish-brown when dry — then reviving fully once moisture returns.
This species favors calcareous (limestone-based) soils, making it a natural fit for Middle Tennessee's Central Basin terrain. It's one of the most extensively studied desiccation-tolerant mosses in plant science, prized by researchers for its ability to fully dry out and later rehydrate without cellular damage — a trait that also makes it an exceptionally forgiving, low-maintenance moss for home growers.
Its compact, textural growth habit makes it a strong choice for rock gardens, terrariums, moss gardens, and green roof plantings — especially in spots that get more sun and less consistent moisture than typical shade-loving mosses can handle.
