Pennsylvania Sedge (Carex pensylvanica) is a fine-textured, arching native sedge grown from wild-type Middle Tennessee stock — the true native species, not a nursery cultivar. Also called Oak Sedge for its strong association with oak-hickory woodlands, this is one of the most valuable native lawn alternatives for the specific problem every Tennessee gardener knows: dry shade where turf grass gives up.
Unlike most sedges, which prefer consistent moisture, Pennsylvania Sedge is genuinely drought-tolerant once established, forming a soft, semi-evergreen carpet under trees without supplemental watering. It's deer-resistant, spreads gently by rhizome to fill in bare woodland floor, and provides seasonal cover for foraging songbirds and the insects they feed on. It's also a larval host plant for the Eyed Brown butterfly and several skipper species.
