Pleurozium schreberi — Red-Stemmed Feathermoss | Native Woodland Moss, Live Vessel

$10.99

Red-Stemmed Feathermoss (Pleurozium schreberi) is a distinctive pleurocarpous moss with a signature crimson-red stem visible beneath its shiny green, feather-like branches. Grown from wild-type Middle Tennessee woodland stock, this moss is a true keystone species of the forest floor — where it establishes, it functions as a living groundcover layer that retains soil moisture, buffers temperature swings, and gives tree seedlings a protected microhabitat to root into.

This species is best known as a dominant floor moss of boreal conifer forests, but its native range extends south into upland woodlands as far as Tennessee, favoring acidic, well-shaded sites. It prefers the kind of quiet, undisturbed woodland floor conditions found under mature canopy — an excellent choice for terrarium builders, woodland-themed plantings, or moss gardens seeking an authentic acidic-forest-floor look with real ecological texture, not just aesthetic filler.

Growing conditions:

  • Light: Shade to deep shade
  • Moisture: Consistent humidity; avoid drying out or standing water
  • Substrate: Acidic, humus-rich soil or well-draining terrarium substrate
  • Setting: Terrariums, woodland gardens, moss gardens, shaded acidic beds

Size: Shipped in an 8 oz vessel, live and actively growing.

Shipping: Orders ship out UPS every Monday.
