Alocasia 'Frydek' Variegata — Variegated Elephant Ear, Live Plant
Alocasia 'Frydek' Variegata is a highly sought-after collector aroid, prized for velvety, arrow-shaped leaves with striking silver-white variegation splashed unpredictably across deep green foliage. Prominent contrasting veins give the leaves an almost hand-painted appearance, and no two leaves display quite the same pattern — a genuine collector centerpiece.
This is the variegated form of Alocasia micholitziana, sometimes called the African Mask Plant for its dramatic, sculptural leaf shape. It stays relatively compact as an indoor specimen, making it well-suited to shelves and tabletops despite its bold presence, though it can grow considerably larger outdoors in favorable conditions.
Care notes:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is essential for maintaining strong variegation; low light causes legginess and reduced patterning. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the delicate leaves.
- Water: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering; never let the plant sit in standing water
- Humidity: High humidity preferred (60–70%+); a humidifier, pebble tray, or grouping with other plants helps maintain moisture
- Soil: Well-draining, chunky aroid mix — perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir
- Water quality: Sensitive to hard tap water; filtered or distilled water helps keep foliage vibrant
- Dormancy: May lose leaves and go dormant in fall/winter with reduced light — this is normal; increasing light and humidity can help prevent dieback
Safety note: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested (calcium oxalate crystals). Keep away from curious pets and children.
